I’d opened the passenger door for Esme when Mom came rushing down the steps with a reusable grocery bag. She held it up. “You forgot your leftovers,” she called. Mom’s voice could go from soft to piercing in a nano-second. Right now her words probably reached our second cousins out in Brooklyn.

“Hang on.” Esme hurried back to meet her at the bottom step. Impatient to be gone, ready to have some alone time with Esme, I watched as Ma handed over the bag, pulled Esme into a one armed hug and whispered something in Esme’s ear. Esme said something back, returned the hug and stood waving as Mom climbed the steps and went back into the house.

I took the bag and set it on the floor of the back seat while Esme settled into the passenger. Once I was in my own seat I examined Esme’s profile. “You and Ma were thick as thieves back there,” I said. “Talking about me?”

Thanks to me blurting out my recollection of her milk allergy, my entire family was now clued in regarding my undying attraction to Esme. And while I didn’t care they knew, it would suck when they felt sorry for me if Esme moved on with her own life without me after we dealt with Rojas. Would she move on? My sisters, no slouches when it came to family inquisitions, got her to admit she wasn’t dating anyone. But there was no doubt if she wanted a guy—the guy would want her back. She was Esme. If she didn’t work so much and if she didn’t have this looming crisis with Rojas to deal with, she could have anybody she wanted. Like Lori made clear: not every woman wants a guy who carries a weapon. And Esme deserved the best. A guy who was highly educated. Refined. Someone who wore a suit to work and belonged to a country club.

But I wasn’t gonna give up without a fight. Not after we found each other after so much time. I shook myself out of my mood. I had my dream girl right next to me—right now. If she gave me any inkling that she returned my feelings…

Esme examined my profile and her lips took on a teasing curve. “You’re funny, Shane. Do you think your mom and I can’t have a conversation without it being all about you?”

“That’s exactly what I think.” I chuckled at the disbelieving way she shook her head.

“Someone is so full of himself.” she said. The scornful twist of her lips was still there but when she evaded my direct gaze, I was certain I was their topic of conversation.

“What can I say? I know my mother.” I threw out the bait.

“Oh yeah? I guarantee you’ll never guess what she said.” Boom. She went for it.

“Then I guess you’ll have to tell me.”

“No way.” She made a zipping motion with her fingers across her delectable lips.

“Then I guess I have no choice. I’ll have to tickle you.” I shrugged again like there was nothing I could do about it.
